Champlain Discovery offers participants a combination of a hands-on boat building day camp followed by a 10-day wilderness expedition. This unique combination of activities sets the stage for a truly life-changing experience for all participants. Get full details here.
Champlain Discovery starts with a three-week daytime camp as you build your very own custom 17’ kayak under the guidance of expert boat builders. Each day, in addition to working on our kayaks, we will take time to learn wilderness skills, navigation, paddling skills, and more.
Once kayaks are complete, we load them and our gear onto the museum’s boat trailer to be dropped off in Whitehall, NY for a 10-day overnight adventure. Along with your fellow kayakers, we will paddle from Whitehall to Burlington, VT. Each day we will stop along the way to explore, learn about the lake, and cook and camp each evening.

Combining woodworking and boat building, kayaking, wilderness skills, and learning from the lake, this expedition truly lets you do the impossible: build your own kayak and take it on an adventure on Lake Champlain.
Participants should be prepared to pitch in and work with their fellow expedition-mates to set up camp, cook, clean up, break down camp, and support each other along the way.
The Champlain Discovery experience is focused on building a positive, collaborative team
We practice low-impact camping and there is little to no running water or bathrooms along the way.
And, of course, you get to keep the kayak!
