Build-Your-Own Rhode Runner Runabout Class

Are you dreaming of building your own CLC Rhode Runner runabout but hesitant to tackle it alone—or don’t have the ideal workspace at home?

In 2025, join us for a hands-on, two-week boatbuilding class at Chesapeake Light Craft’s Annapolis, Maryland factory. Our expert instructors will guide you through every step of the build over the course of 2 weeks, working Monday - Saturday each week.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a fully assembled Rhode Runner hull ready for final epoxy work, finish work, and outfitting at home. You’ll leave with a seaworthy foundation, the skills to complete the project, and the confidence to customize your boat—whether installing the motor, fitting out the interior, or adding finishing touches that make it uniquely yours.

Class Package: $9,645

The Rhode Runner class is an all-inclusive experience and includes:

  • Tuition for two, three, or four students (a minimum of two is required)

Rhode Runner Runabout Class – FAQ’s

How does the class work?

You'll arrive at 8:00 AM on Monday with a teammate (or four!). The class runs Monday–Friday, 8am–5/6pm, and Saturdays from 8am–noon. The class is held in our temperature-controlled workshop at CLC in Annapolis, led by a professional instructor. You’ll build your own Rhode Runner with expert guidance, plus occasional teamwork to keep everyone on track.

I'm a beginner. Is this class for me? What are the requirements?

Yes! No experience is required. You just need energy, a willingness to learn, and the ability to stay focused for two weeks. Each boatbuilding team must include at least two people due to the size of the project. You’ll be on your feet a lot—wear comfy shoes and clothing that can get dirty (they’ll get epoxy on them). You'll also need a way to transport your boat home.

Will I need to bring my own tools?

We’ll provide a short list of basic tools to bring, such as a cordless drill, clamps, dust masks, and safety glasses. The CLC shop is fully equipped, and you’ll use our tools for many build steps.

How much does it cost, and what do I get?

The total cost is $9,645 per boatbuilding team (includes a minimum of 2 students; up to 2 more can be added).
This includes:

  • Tuition for up to four people; a minimum of two is required.

  • Complete Rhode Runner kit with Pre-assembled parts

  • All class consumables (gloves, mixing cups, brushes, coffee, etc.)

  • A $4,500 deposit secures your spot; the balance is due 30 days before class.

Where is the class?

Chesapeake Light Craft, 1805 George Ave, Annapolis, MD 21401

Where do I stay during the class?

You will arrange your accommodations, but we will provide a list of nearby hotels and rentals. Room and board are not included in the class fee.

I've already started a CLC Rhode Runner. Can I bring it to the class and finish it?

No. All students start from the same point to keep the build synchronized. CLC’s class choreography is based on 25+ years of experience and works best when everyone builds together. Contact us if you have a partially built boat and want us to help you complete the project.

What is NOT included in the class that I'll need to purchase?

  • Essential hand tools (we’ll send a list)

  • Room and board (see link to local lodging)

  • You will need transportation for your boat after the class. A local dealer sells these.

  • Optional outfitting (accessories, windshield, hardware kit, finishing supplies, interior seats, steering system)

How do I sign up?

Register online on this page or by phone with a $4,500 deposit. We’ll charge the remaining balance 30 days before class. Kits are custom-prepared for each student and include pre-assembled parts, so discounts and promotions do not apply.

What's the cancellation policy?

  • If CLC cancels (due to low enrollment, emergencies, etc.): 100% refund

  • If you cancel 30+ days prior: Refund minus $100

  • If you cancel less than 30 days prior: There is no refund, but your kit can be shipped to you at your expense or picked up at CLC.
