I have done it with a rubber glove covered finger and rubbing alchohol before the fillet sets fully. Works fine. So does a wire brush attachment on a dremel tool. Almost works too well - be careful.
Be sure to strip the wax off completely. You could also use peel ply to get the same result.
I added the glass tape before the fillets cured so didn't worry too much about the fillets. The epoxy and tape smooths it all out pretty well.
