If the cap is strong enough I'd mount the bars further apart. I particularly like to mount the rear bar as far to the rear as possible for ease in loading. [You might want to re-enforce the cap, glass a piece of strap iron up there]
As far as a cockpit cover is concerned, I've found that they stay on but I don't trust them to do so and tether them to the deck rigging.
I would also tie the bow to the front bumper as a further safety tie.
