Joe, the high build primer is very soft and easily sanded. I suggest doing it by hand, as it should go quickly and you do not want to go through it. Number of coats of navy blue? I do not recall how many coats of yellow I used, but probably two coats will do. Whatever pleases your eye. Remember, this is a kayak and meant to be used. It will get scratched and battered, no matter how careful you (or your son) are. Don't worry too much, and enjoy the time on the water with your son.
