Hugh,
If you don't want to use hardware, draw a line where the bottom edge will be, break up a bunch of popsicle sticks or the equivalent, and hot glue them below that line. They will keep the rails from slipping down.
Carefully epoxy rails in place - hold with packing tape until cured. The sticks will knock off easily and voila!
I like rails - to me they add to the lines of the craft.
