I've always used the paddle as an outrigger to get in and out, as that's what I've read in some kayaking magazines. I put my weight as close to the center of the kayak as possible, with just enough lean towards the paddle side to keep from flipping over the other way. If it's rough water, I find it is key to just get moving away from shore as fast as possible. Once you get a little away from shore, the waves usually aren't so bad and I can finish putting my skirt on.
