That's the way I was taught o'many moons ago. Use the paddle to stabilize the yak, not for support. Sorta like a paddle float recovery but with dry land for the float. Exiting was much the same.
Saw it in a couple of books too (reach to bookshelf...flip...flip...Paddling Basics: Kayak..Cecil Kuhne..yep)
Altough I'm considering the old Grand Prix running start & leap into the cockpit method.
