I haven't had any experience applying gelcoat to a kayak, but I have experience as an owner of a sailboat with a gelcoat finish and I'm not sure that it will stand up any better than a good paint job. My experience with it is that when it gets banged up it tends to chip, sometimes in big chunks. It will also scratch just like a painted boat.
