I would not argue with LeeG, but would offer a different perspective. Besides keeping the deck from flattening out, the beams also provide strength. I even built an extra one for the rear deck, putting one on each side of the hatch opening, to increase the strength in a place where a person straddles during re-entry. Maybe not necessary, but I did it just as a precaution. The deck beams provided are bigger than necessary, so you can mark off the angle of the shear clamps with a straight-edge and cut the beams to fit perfectly.
