I did mine indoors without a mask. It doesn't take very long to apply the paint, and I didn't get a headache or stuffy nose. I did ventilate by opening some windows.
By the way, I applied my primer at night with the windows open. The problem was that every bug in the neighborhood was curious about the kayak, having watched me build it for so long. They came to inspect the finishing work and ended up part of the project.
My lesson, paint and prime during the day with the windows open. At night, the light will attract far too many insects.
