Try this if you want a real solid deck beam. Cut the vertical beam to the usual dimensions. Epoxy in place. Cut a 1 1/4" okoume strip the same length as the curved span from side panel to side panel under the sheers at the location of your beam and glue it to the underside of your beam to form an upside down T. It is important to fill any gaps or spaces in this structure with thickened epoxy - like under the sheers. Your deck will complete the "I" beam when glued on. I used this for all four of my deck beams.
