Well, I've come upon this thread in the bottom of the 9th, I see. I went nail-less, and when I dry fitted the deck, everything fit just great. Then I did it for real, and discovered, a day late, that I didn't have contact with the tops of the bulkheads (short attention span, eh?) I filled the gap with dookie, and all's well.
So what went wrong? I suspect I cranked the ol' straps a bit tighter than I had for my practice run. In retrospect, I think I could've got it right, using the same technique. There's no question, though, that had I trimmed the overlap a bit closer to the shear, it wouldn't have been a problem, even with the excess pressure. You can definitely crank in a fair amount of leverage with that 3-plus inch overhang. And while I think the nail method is fine, if you want to go nail=less, it's do-able.
