Thanks Lee for the advice, and others for the moral support! I'm backing off from the "viking funeral" plans which ran through my head all last night. Life might be worth living after all.

Got a message back from the contractor, who now admits his crew dropped a 20' length of PVC from the top of our roof onto the boat-- "but the guys didn't see any scratches or anything, so they didn't mention it." Perhaps their poor vision explains why they drop things off roofs?
