I too, am interested in answers to your problem, as I will have to store my kayak in an unheated cottage basement which is very damp in the three seasons when it isn't -40. I've been told that as long as the boat has no water in it there shouldn't be a problem as long as temperature changes aren't sudden.
Our boats are wood, epoxy and varnish. I wonder if 3 year cured varnish is less flexible than the other two components and thus cracked from extreem expansion/contraction. Do you have varnish in your cockpit and around your coaming? How did it fair?
