I've taught it,,and seen a few folks use it as their back-up technique. I've never used it and hope I'm not in a position to need to. It's just a line or length of webbing. If a person cannot get in without it then they should paddle accordingly,ie. not alone in rough conditions,it's more likely an aid that a person who isn't very big might carry to help assist a bigger person who's having problems and they're not in a postion to reach over and help drag them into their kayak. I would recommend learning it just as learning towing or knot tieing is worthwhile. Learning an all-in rescue would be more worthwhile.
