Chesapeake Double

I'm a Freshman in a hig school on an island in Maine. For our voc. ed. project this trimester we built a chesapeake double kayak. Right now, we're about to begin the process of sanding and varnishing/painting. I was just wondering if anyone had seen kayaks with painted hulls and varnished decks, possibly with a 1/2-1 inch strip of paint around the edge of the deck. That's a paint scheme we're looking at. We'd like to ahve some varnish, but we feel that bottom isn't quite nice enough to varnish. Hopefully I'll be able to give some updates as we finish it and drop it in the water. Thanks for any feedback
