Hi from Maine too! Beyond wanting to cover some flaws on the hull, there is a very good reason to paint the hull and that is safety! An overturned boat with varnish on the hull looks like a wet log from the shore. It would not cause alarm from anybody on shore at all. I paddle alone a lot and painted my hull black for maximum visibility from shore in case of emergency. White is not as visible from shore because it blends in with whitecaps and glare off the water. I suppose some day-glow colors would be even better as far as safety is concerned, but those colors look bad (TO ME) with a varnished deck.
