the first year I moved out here I was invited on a Thanksgiving overnight kayaking trip out at Assateague,,,20-25mph wind with gusts to 35mph, it was heinously hard to make way and hold a course. What you are describing is what I had to do with some moments of intense concentration to put the blade in EXACTLY the right spot with sufficient effort. Once the concentration flagged I was blown off course,,,once you're putting out 98% sustainable effort all that's left is technique since bad technique won't be compensated with horsepower.
