Re: Automotive clear coat

James,

We can get virtually a furniture type finish on our epoxy coats. The primary, first, and most important reason for the varnish is often lost in our persuit of perfection - Ultraviolet ray protection for the epoxy. UV will break the epoxy down in one season in the sun. That's why we are cautioned to use Marine varnish from a boat shop - not floor/furniture finish (or even "marine" finish) from Home Depot.

Unless the automotive finish is loaded with UV blockers, or can be applied over three or four coats of marine varnish, I'd vote not to do it - no matter how great it looks.

My 2 cents
