deck details

Im building a 16lt from plans Im about to install deck. I want the nails to show. For a brite deck/painted hull where typically is the separation between varnish and paint. On the hull to deck seam itself? Many pictures I see place the line inwards of the sheerclamps. What are some ways to go about applying some sort of deck design.(small classy,not flames and strippers)
