Safer to hang it, even if storing it "on end". This ensures that it won't be knocked over. If you can hang it horizontally like John has, even better. A few years back I bought a SportsPal canoe early in the spring from a warehouse full of vertically-stacked boats. The fellow had to go get a rolling platform ladder, and I wondered why until I noticed that all the boats had a heavy cord running from the prow up to a rafter above. When I asked if there had been a problem, the one word answer was "Dominos", followed by a sad shake of the head. I couldn't see any other use for the ladder, and assume that the insurance company had insisted on it to allow the securing the boats in this fashion.
