Okay, here's three votes for doing the test piece. Also a third vote of confidence it will work, although your material will likely stay looking permanently wet, as in soaking wet (a wet t-shirt kayak??? Now THAT could make for some interesting deck art...). So best get to liking your fabric choice that way as your point of departure.
