Now, if you're ever gonna do that trick again, might try soaking the wood before steaming it, maybe for a couple days, even. Might not need the notches then (even though they WERE an excellent idea!). I second Joe's applause: and PICTURES too!
Another alternative I thought about is buying basswood sheet at the hobby shop. R/C airplane modelers live and die by that stuff, and it ought to be a dandy material for laminating end pieces. Should be easy to strip using a straightedge and utility knife with a fresh blade in it. (How many of y'all have a ten-year-old blade in your box cutter???)
