On re-reading your message I noticed the length of the planks.

The trash poplar is small and they generally rot out and fall over well before they could produce even a good eight foot plant.

Quaking Aspen, one of the poplars, is usually the first species to appear in a burn area. It needs to be in the open to grow. It is intolerant of shade.
