My Chesapeake-16 has come through all the self-recoveries, assisted recoveries, and crashing surf just fine. The hull is fiberglassed, the deck not. In one exercise, a big fellow stood on the decks of our rafted kayaks. If you sealed the wood inside and out with epoxy, you should have no problem with water damage. These boats are intended to get wet, inside as well as out.
