I use very narrow fillets over the wires, in deferrence to my preference for light boats as well as to my notorious parsimony. The wires and fillets are covered with seam tape anyway, so it's basically an aesthetic issue if some copper shows through the tape inside the hull. Shove those wires into the seam with a screwdriver tip, like the manual says, and you can get a pretty narrow fillet along the seam.
