Planing scarf joints

At the risk of sounding like a heretic has anyone ever used an electric planer for cutting scarf joints? In the book it states that �it is probably easier to cut a scarf joint with a block plane than explain how to do it.� I have much time in the scarfs of a MC 16.5 already and I�m just wondering if next time to go electric.
