I did use a power plane w/ a commercial jig for most scarfs, a few done by hand. While it certainly saved aalot of time, it took great care, and practive with the tool to get a good scarf. The jig and plane were expensive but my friend had them (valuable friend...). I ended up finishing both the powered and hand planed scarfs with a hand sanding block for a smooth joint.
