Hey Gavin,
Let me know how the Devcon works out. I'm a big fan of brass strips, and I've had some on some boats for five years of use in Maine and Canada.
I did once try Marine Tex, which, I believe, is aluminum and epoxy. The hard northern granite ground it off is a few days of hard use.
I have directions for brass rub strip application, if you'd like them. I find they're easier to apply even after painting/varnishing, last mucho long, concentrate the protection where it's needed and add little weight.
