I second Johns statement. I paddled a Merganser hybrid six yrs ago, built and paddled a Merganser 16 and 18 three and one year ago. If the Merganser 17 hull and Shearwater 17 hull are the same I think you'll find that the decreased maneuverability will be an irritation for the slight amount of weathercocking correction you'll use.
