I do not know what it tasks to do a MC16 but the outside of a Ches 17 can be done with one quart.
If you are buying varnish in large volume you should consider transfering into smaller containers the first time you open the can. Varnish not only drys (VOCs evaporate) it also cures with contact to air. So every time you open the can and every time you trap a volume of air in a half empty can the varnish skims over, forms lumps and thickens. I seem to throw away the last fourth of a quart can if I do not transfer to smaller containers. Varnish only has a recommended one year shelf life if unopened.
