Straight-line speed and fast turning are almost mutually exclusive, which is why many racing kayaks have rudders or trim tabs. A rudder is the obvious solution, but if they're disallowed (kinda strange), you should practice your leaned turns. I've got a lot of hours and miles in the Pax 18 and it can be turned in its on length if you lean it over far enough.
