If the skeg extends via the bungie and is retracted by a cord then, when deployed, it can get bumped up into the well without damage. It is good to have a means to grab ahold of the skeg from the slot to clear a jam. I have see guys drill a hole in the tip of the skeg and tie a small loop of cord through it to provide something to pull on. Not the cleanest but effective.
