It might work temporarily. But since varnish is not an adhesive it might peel up or bubble over time. And when it comes time to re-varnish the entire boat, your sanding to prep the surface would probably sand into the rice paper, and then you might end up with a "fuzzy" area.
But then again, if you dont like the looks of it, it wouldn't be hard to remove.
