My sense is that the screwed on deck beam is a design artifact of the Yare/Severn where the deck beam had to be screwed into place or it would pop out. Between your experience, KyleT and the Arctic Hawk design it's pretty obvious that not only isn't the screw unnecesary structually but so is the deck beam once the coaming/deck are all finished.
