strip tops

New question! While my nieces and nephews are stitching and gluing, I can hardly resist the temptation to start to build a strip top kayak, like that pretty shearwater that I sure can't afford to buy from a kit. So I was thinking I might make a Ch 17L hull, then put in some temp extra forms and try to make a strip top. Worse case senario is a failed attempt, I can always put on an okoume top if the strip thing doesn't work out. Is that a crazy thing without plans?
