If what you are after is the look and have a plywood deck - how about veneering thin strips to the existing deck. It will weigh more than the plywood deck but not much. Could offwet this by using thinner plywood. Might end up comparable in weight to a full up strip deck. It certainly will be strong and stable.
This is not as strange an idea as you would think - this is a recommended method to create a teak deck on a boat without using alot of teak. One way to hold down the strips while the epoxy sets is using staples (temporary using strips of plastic under the staple to pull it out after the epoxy has set).
