I forgot to mention. Your idea about leaving the deck beam out makes me think that if you are still concerned about lack of adequate deck support without the deck beam, that you could laminate 2-3 plys of 2" uni-directional carbon cloth across the undersurface of the deck where the deck beam is located to give it that extra stiffness and strength. Anyone tried this?
