How much Penetrol?

Am about to begin varnishing the deck of my CH16. I read about using penetrol to improve the flow characteristics, but I don't know how much to use. The directions on the can just say to add penetrol until the varnish spreads smoothly and evenly. Without knowing where to start, I could cover most of the deck before I got it right. Does anyone know what the mixture ratio should be? Jim
