Thanks for the feedback, David, your explanation is helpful. You mentioned varnish, while I was actually speaking of paint, but I gather that the same is true for both? In any case, despite my best intentions, I don't ever seem able to get back to the job in time for an "overcoat". So even though we're only going for a "workboat" finish, I'm still sanding between coats. Oh well.
