Rock Guard on GP

While I await delivery of my Sea Island Sport kit, I thought I'd amuse and amaze my self by making another Greenland Paddle - this time from Cedar and White Pine.
As these woods are incredibly soft, I thought of epoxying on some rock guard tips prior to final shaping.
Has anyone had any luck/experience in this area? ie: What material did you use (I'm out of whale bone) and how easily did it go?
Thanks as always and
Cheers
Mac from Montreal
