Exterior house paint?

I would like to paint my CLC 17 in the style of Maltese vessels: see URL

http://www.maltavista.net/en/list/photo/1585.html but find purchasing 3-4 qts. of marine paint too expensive. Can I use exterior oil based [or other?]house paints? With either marine or the exterior paint what could be used for a filler type primer? TIA,
