Hi Lee,

The old rule I learned (via Dynamite Payson) is that two coats of primer, and two coats of top coat will do the job... (I prefer three and three (or more) of the best boat paint/varnish available.)

But back to your question... The primer does more than just "prime" for the grip of the top coat... It helps to fill the minute imperfections in the surface of the craft itself.

At some point I think this becomes a judgement call based on time/money/need to get on the water...

I guess the bottom line is that you really just need true UV protection for the glass and epoxy.
