I've seen Brightsides zip off of smooth epoxy, I guess primer could provide a better grip.
My take on it is that unlike sailboats a kayak gets banged around on the ground so I'd just as soon have more epoxy than paint or primer to take the abrasion. Making the top fill coats out of a tinted and slightly more sandable epoxy would give more durability for the painting and sanding effort.
