Strap a GPS to the deck to better gauge the instantaneous speed . Paddle both boats on the same day, same conidtions, same direction (to account for wind). Paddle both flat out for a few minutes and you'll see big differences. Since you can't maintain max output during a normal paddle the speed differnces won't be quite as great.
With the GPS speed display glaring at you it forces you concentrate. I don't take my GPS as a drill sergeant, but he reminds when I'm not paying attention when my speed drops.
