scarf overlap question
Posted by Antal on Nov 15, 2006
I'm just getting off the ground with my Chesapeake 17 kit. I've got the hull panels lined up and ready to glue the scarf joints. I understand the key is to maintain the same thickness (4mm) across the panel and joint. So I broke out the handy calipers and found that to do this means I need leave about a 3/8" space between the end of the overlapping piece (the thinnest point) and the beginning of the bevel on the underlying piece (if that makes sense). Does that sound correct? The two possible problems I see are 1) theres's not enough surface area contact left for a solid joint and 2) it will mean a very obvious seam.
