A cellphone is better than nothing, and you can call the spouse with it, but I think the poster was asking about VHF radios. The two are not equivalent. The link is to an article that explains it better than I can (although some of it does not apply to kayaks) Also, I'm not sure how much I trust those waterproof pouch thingies. I've seen them mist up on the inside...
