Keep in mind an sos with a cell phone will only be heard by who you are calling. A VHF sos will be heard by all boaters in the area who have their radio on. Most do. A cell is a nice addition to a VHF, but a VHF is the #1 preferred means of communication with boaters on the water. The coast guard can also triangulate your radio signal to figure out where you are.
