I ran out of copper wire on the final re-assemble of my Merganser and ended up using light weight steel wire and it acually worked better for me. Didn't break as easily when aligning the panels and twisting etc and was easier to work into tight spots as it stayed stiffer. To answer the obvious question NO it did not damage the wood.
